Monte Castelo, a city in the north of Santa Catarina, recorded about 400 meteors between Sunday night (30) and early Monday morning (31). They are part of the Delta Aquarids of the South rain, one of the best to observe in Brazil. The information is from g1 SC.

According to astronomer Jocimar Justino, the meteors in this shower are probably formed by debris from comet 96P/Machholz, which brushes past the Sun. Despite easy observation, rain celestial bodies are often faint and do not have persistent trails or fireballs.

According to Justino, the meteors from Delta Aquarids of the South have been registered for several days by the monitoring stations Rede Brasileira de Observação de Meteoros (Bramon). In Santa Catarina, due to cloudy weather last week, it was not possible to register the phenomenon.

— Already on that last night, the observation conditions were more favorable. The only thing that disturbed was the brightness of the moon and the fog that appeared in the late morning – he explains.

The rain usually occurs from July 12th and can be seen until August 23rd. Its correct origin is still unknown, but it is believed that it was originated by the debris of comet 96P Machholz, discovered in 1996.

What is a meteor?

The meteor is a luminous phenomenon that occurs when a small fragment of space rock crosses the atmosphere at very high speed.

When it enters the Earth, this fragment rapidly compresses and heats the atmospheric gas, forming a bubble of plasma (heated and ionized gas), which glows for a certain period of time.
