Delay at Deutsche Bahn inevitable: These major construction sites cause disabilities

2022 will be built again at Deutsche Bahn. Travelers need patience at these stations and routes in Hesse and Germany.

Frankfurt – New year, new construction sites: This applies not only to most people, but also to Deutsche Bahn. Although the Corona year* 2021 was associated with major sales losses for DB due to the home office, investments in new trains and the company’s own rail infrastructure are planned – in addition to general innovations at Deutsche Bahn in 2022.

Rail travelers can therefore expect some major construction sites and the associated disruptions, delays and cancellations in the new year. We have summarized the most important construction sites known to date for 2022.

Major construction site of Deutsche Bahn at Frankfurt Central Station

It is already known that Frankfurt Central Station* is to be modernized from May 27th to August 26th, 2022. The result is a restructuring of the B level at Frankfurt Central Station and a new fire protection concept*.

Trains cannot stop at Frankfurt Central Station during this period. The affected trains therefore stop in Frankfurt* West, for example the trains on the every two-hour ICE/IC line Stralsund – Hamburg – Hanover – Kassel – Frankfurt – Karlsruhe. These run on the Friedberg – Darmstadt section without stopping at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. From Frankfurt West there are still regular S-Bahn connections to the main station.

From January 15th to 17th will be on the route Frankfurt-Heidelberg Cable work done. The route will be completely closed on both days and trains will be diverted. All long-distance Deutsche Bahn stops in Darmstadt, Bensheim and Weinheim will be canceled this weekend.

Major DB construction sites in Hesse: Fulda -Würzburg line affected

Between June 11 and December 10, 2022, the high-speed route between Hanover and Würzburg will be extensively renovated. The route section Fulda – Würzburg is planned for this. There, 20 tunnels, 16 bridges and 86 kilometers of track will be renewed.

There will be two phases for construction. In the first phase until mid-October, passengers on long-distance trains on the Frankfurt – Würzburg section will need around 20 minutes longer than usual. In the second phase from October 17th, the travel time in long-distance traffic between Fulda and Würzburg will be extended by 40 to 60 minutes. In some cases, cancellations are to be expected, and individual stops – for example in Hanau or at Frankfurt Central Station – can be omitted completely. Frankfurt Süd will serve as an alternative stop during this period.

Expansion of the S6 S-Bahn line from Friedberg to Frankfurt continues

Since the end of 2017, the track expansion for the S6 S-Bahn line between Friedberg and Frankfurt West* has been underway, which has caused some trouble with the residents*. According to the construction schedule, the construction of further railway overpasses and retaining walls will start in 2022, and the earthworks will then be completed. New noise protection walls and temporary platforms are to be built between Bad Vilbel and Frankfurt West, the overhead line system is to be erected and points are to be installed in Bad Vilbel. In addition, the first new track in Bad Vilbel and Frankfurt is to be put into operation during this period. From 2022 to 2023, the S-Bahn tracks and platforms will be converted and put into operation.

Major construction sites of Deutsche Bahn: An overview of the non-Hessian routes

Deutsche Bahn is also busy building in other federal states in 2022. But which stations and routes are affected?

  • Dortmund main station (June 10th to December 10th, 2022): As part of the modernization of Dortmund Central Station, the pedestrian tunnel will be expanded and step-free platform access will be built. In individual cases, there are diversions, platform changes, lost connections and canceled stops.
  • Stuttgart main station (July 29th to September 11th, 2022): In Stuttgart Central Station, modernization work is being carried out as part of the Stuttgart 21 project. As a result of the work, there are individual stops in Vaihingen/Enz and Stuttgart Hbf between Stuttgart and Heidelberg/Mannheim. Because of this and other construction work on the Gäubahn, the two-hour IC direct connections Stuttgart – Zurich are no longer available.
  • Munich-Salzburg/Innsbruck (May 20th to August 1st, 2022): Refurbishment work on the railway overpass on Pilgesheimer Straße between Munich East and Munich South. At the same time, the tracks between Rosenheim and Salzburg will be renewed on the Rumgraben – Salzburg section. During the construction work, the long-distance trains between Munich and Salzburg will run every two hours – not every hour as usual. Some trains run from or to Munich East instead of Munich Hbf and at different arrival and departure times.
  • Hamburg-Hanover (June 11th to September 23rd, 2022): Between Hamburg-Harburg and Celle, work is being carried out on tracks and points as well as work on level crossings. As a result, some of the trains will be diverted via Rotenburg (Wümme) – Verden (Aller), each without stopping. Failures are also to be expected. Attention: The rerouted trains reach Hamburg about 20 minutes later or leave Hamburg 20 minutes earlier.
  • Osnabrück Rhine (June 25th to August 5th, 2022): The travel times will be extended by around 60 minutes as a result of a detour via Münster, which will change arrival and departure times. In addition, there will be no stops in Bad Oeynhausen and Ibbenbüren, as well as individual journeys.
  • Brunswick-Magdeburg (10/15/2022 to 12/10/2022): Between Wolfsburg and Braunschweig, the currently single-track route will be double-tracked to increase capacity. During the construction work, rail passengers between Wolfsburg and Göttingen and between Magdeburg and Hanover must expect detours and partial cancellations.
  • Koblenz-Cologne (03.01 to 16.01.2022): Several works are being carried out on the route between Bonn and Cologne as part of the “ESTW Linke Rheinstrecke” project and to upgrade the route for the ETCS train control system. As a result, there are no stops at the long-distance stops in Koblenz, Andernach, Remagen and Bonn.
  • (January 24th to February 28th, 2022): In the Cologne junction and on the left Rhine line, overhead line work, work for the “ESTW Linke Rheinstrecke” project and work to upgrade the line for ETCS will be carried out from Monday to Friday. The route will be closed on one track at a time. Some of the trains have to be diverted via the right bank of the Rhine, eliminating stops in Andernach, Remagen and Bonn. In addition, some trains between Bonn and Cologne will no longer operate.
  • Nuremberg-Erfurt (07.01. to 04.03.2022): Construction work on the upgraded and new Nuremberg – Ebensfeld line restricts rail traffic. From February 5, some total closures will be necessary, which is why all trains will be diverted over a large area during this period or will be canceled on the Munich – Berlin section. Almost all long-distance stops in Bamberg, Erlangen and Coburg can temporarily not be approached. During the rest of the time, the route is mostly single track. This leads to partial failures and travel time extensions of up to 20 minutes.
  • Berlin-Stralsund (January 14th to March 6th, 2022): Between Berlin and Stralsund, work is being carried out on the Angermünde – Wilmersdorf section on the weekends. The trains of the ICE connections Munich – Ostseebad Binz and Berlin – Ostseebad Binz will be diverted between Berlin and Stralsund, the stops in Bernau (b Bln), Eberswalde, Angermünde, Prenzlau, Pasewalk, Anklam, Züssow and Greifswald will be omitted. Alternatively, the trains stop in Neustrelitz.
  • Leipzig-Dresden (01/17 to 01/29/2022): In Riesa, an old bridge structure is being dismantled. To do this, the route must be completely closed. As a result of the detour, the trains between Leipzig and Dresden run with a travel time extension of around 60 minutes, and some trains are also no longer used on this section of the route. The long-distance stop in Riesa is omitted and is instead reached by local transport (partly with rail replacement buses).
  • Berlin-Frankfurt-Oder (21.01. to 24.01.2022, 29. + 30.01.2022): Between Pillgram and Frankfurt (Oder) bridge and platform work will be carried out. During this time, the trains between Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) will be canceled and replaced by buses.

In Hesse alone, Deutsche Bahn is investing billions in infrastructure. (Larissa Wolf) *fnp.de and wetterauer-zeitung.de are offers from IPPEN.MEDIA.
