Deer Parks Granted Permanent Exemption: Future of Deer Parks Secured

12 dec 2023 om 13:33

Deer parks may continue to exist. The camps were previously threatened because there would be a ban on keeping fallow and red deer. But an exception will apply to animals.

The outgoing cabinet will come up with a so-called pet and hobby animal list next year, which will include animals that you can keep. Animals not on the list are prohibited. Deer were initially not going to be on the list. Deer parks were allowed to remain open until the last deer had died.

“After the publication of the proposal for the domestic and hobby animal list, there is…
There has been a lot of social attention for this list. There were many
positive reactions, but also concerns, especially from keepers of fallow deer and red deer in deer parks”, writes outgoing Minister Piet Adema (Agriculture) on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the keepers have drawn attention to the fact that “deer camps in the Netherlands have a long history, are widespread and have a social value”. This has led Adema to decide to grant a permanent exemption to holders of fallow deer and red deer.

At the beginning of this year, Adema said that keeping deer should be banned. “The animal is intended to roam freely in nature,” the politician said at the time.

Adema expects that the list of permitted animals will be finalized on May 1, 2024, after which the list will come into effect on July 1.
