Deep Storm Babet Brings Strong Winds and Heavy Rains to Western Half of Peninsula

MADRID, 17 (SERVIMEDIA)

A total of 24 provinces spread across nine autonomous communities, mainly in the western half of the peninsula, are under warning this Tuesday for wind, rain or rough seas due to the influence of the deep storm Babet, protagonist of the first Atlantic storm of the autumn.

The prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), collected by Servimedia, indicates that the most significant thing is the probability of persistent and locally strong rains in the west and south of Galicia, Sanabria (Zamora), the west of the Central System and the extreme southwest of the peninsula.

In addition, intervals of strong winds with a southern component will blow on the coasts of Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the Gulf of Cádiz, with very strong gusts in large areas of the northwest half of the peninsula.

There is an orange warning – significant risk for outdoor activities – for gusts of 110 km/h in Asturias (Cantabrian Mountains and Picos de Europa) and 100 km/h in Cantabria (Liébana), as well as waves of five to seven meters in A Coruña (west and southwest) and Pontevedra.

The rest of the warnings are yellow level -risk-, especially for gusts of 70 to 90 km/h, distributed in A Coruña, Ávila, Pontevedra, Salamanca, Segovia, Valladolid and Zamora in their entirety, as well as areas of A Coruña , Asturias, Badajoz, Burgos, Cáceres, Cádiz, Cantabria, Ciudad Real, Córdoba, La Rioja, León, Lugo, Navarra, Ourense, Palencia, Seville, Toledo and Zamora.

Meteorology has decreed a yellow warning for heavy or persistent rains in A Coruña (west and southwest), Ávila (south and Central System), Cáceres (north), Huelva (the entire province), Ourense (south and mountains), Pontevedra (coastal ), Salamanca (the entire province) and Zamora (Sanabria). And because of bad seas in Lugo.

Babet, named by the Met Office (British meteorological service), is the first deep storm that will influence the weather this Tuesday. The southern component winds will drive air masses of subtropical origin to the peninsula, with mild temperatures and high humidity content.

The Met Office has a different naming system for high-impact Atlantic storms to the group of national meteorological services in Belgium, Spain, France, Luxembourg and Portugal, which also has a ‘roulette’ of storm names from A (Aline) to W (Wilhelmina). The one from the British organization premiered on September 25 with Agnes and continues now with Babet; The following ones will continue with the letters of the alphabet and the last one in the relationship is Walid.

AUTUMN ATMOSPHERE

The center of the storm Babet was located this morning west of Galicia and will approach the peninsula, while sending a front.

Consequently, the sky will be cloudy or overcast in most of the peninsula and the rains will move from west to east, although they will affect the western half and the Pyrenean environment. No precipitation is expected in the east and southeast of the peninsula.

The Balearic Islands will have cloudy intervals and the sky in the Canary Islands will increase to cloudy intervals due to the approach of the tail of an Atlantic front, which could leave an occasional shower on the most prominent islands.

On the other hand, temperatures will decrease in the Canary Islands, the southwest of the peninsula and the Valencian Community, and will rise in the rest, especially in Girona and the eastern Cantabrian Sea.

It will be warmer in Córdoba (31 degrees) and Bilbao, Murcia and Santander (30), and it will be cooler especially in Ávila (19) and León (20).

Finally, this Tuesday very intense southern winds are expected in general on the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and they will become strong on the coasts of Galicia, with strong intervals in the Cantabrian Sea and the Gulf of Cádiz.
