One of the things that is believed to be able to measure service life ban is to pay attention to the production code so that a recommendation appears, don’t buy it if it has expired. However, Michelin Indonesia explained that this was not entirely true.

The production date of a tire can be seen from the code on the wall area which is now generally a four digit number. For example, 1922 indicates that the tire was produced in the 19th week of 2022.

When buying new tires, consumers are recommended to look for tires that are not too old, refer to the code to find the expiration date.

“Tires are not like packaged food which has an expiration date, what we have is a production date, manufacturing date (MFG) or week of production, that’s actually our function for tire manufacturers, to quarantine tires when a factory error occurs if there is damage during that week, not tire age indicator,” explained PT Michelin Indonesia Customer Engineering Support, Mochammad Fachrul Rozi in Jakarta, Friday (8/9), as reported by Antara.

According to Rozi, the age of a tire is calculated from the time it attaches to the rim, is filled with air and has withstood the load of transportation.

“If maintained, technically we can use tires for up to 10 years,” he said.

So the production date is considered not to necessarily affect the quality of the tire even though it is quite old. Another factor that influences tire quality is said to be the tire supplier’s storage warehouse.

Rozi suggests that purchasing tires should be done from a provider that has a storage warehouse that is maintained and has good standards.

“If the warehouse is adequate, it will be safe, but sometimes there are providers whose warehouses are damp, or even have lots of rats, mixed with repair shops or generators, this will definitely reduce the quality of the tires,” said Rozi.

According to Rozi, a good tire storage warehouse has the right humidity level, good air circulation, good lighting and the correct tire stacking method.

“The way to check new tires but the old stock is easy, visually you can see that if they have not been stored well, there will definitely be cracks, apart from that, it’s safe,” he said.
