As part of the federal government’s stimulus package, all petrol stations in Germany should be obliged to create charging points for electric cars. Fears of range are to be reduced and new incentives for the purchase of electric cars are to be created.

Audi e-tron, Mercedes EQC, Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf - all of them will soon have to worry less about the range.

In order to get more electric cars on the road, all gas stations in Germany will soon be equipped with charging stations. The measure, referred to in German as “supply requirement”, is part of the € 130 billion corona stimulus package, reports the Reuters news agency.

So far there are around 28,000 charging stations for electric cars in Germany. A patchy charging infrastructure and range anxiety are generally considered important reasons why German car buyers have so far been reluctant to buy electric cars.

The measure is now to counter this. In 2019, just 1.8 percent of all new car buyers opted for a purely electric vehicle. The Corona crisis has not changed that much either. In May 2020, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), of 168,148 new registrations, 5,578 were electric cars.

Additional purchase premium for electric cars

The federal government’s stimulus package also provides for a doubling of the car purchase premium for electric cars up to a net price of EUR 40,000. There is now a grant of 6,000 euros. Buyers of cars with combustion engines do not receive a subsidy. In addition, 2.5 billion euros are to flow into the country’s own battery cell research and production.
