Decathlon: drama about gold favorite Warner – world champion Kaul on course

Status: 07/24/2022 05:33 a.m

Decathlon gold at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene is not about Olympic champion Damian Warner. The favorite injured himself in the 400 m race. Defending champion Niklas Kaul is doing well after the first day of competition.

How bitter: Damian Warner was on course for his first world title, leading after four disciplines before the drama took its course. On the back straight in the final 400m race, the Canadian suddenly grabbed his left thigh and fell to the ground, his face contorted in pain. The end for the Olympic champion.

Kaul on the road at Doha level

“It would have been his chance to become world champion here. I’m just sorry and it hurts a bit,” said Niklas Kaul on ZDF. The 2019 Doha World Champion has put himself in a good starting position for the decision on Sunday with a strong 400m race at the end of the first day. After five disciplines, the man from Mainz is in 16th place with 4,147 points and only 17 points behind his intermediate mark in the triumph in Doha.

I regained a lot of self-confidence in the afternoon and I want to continue with that tomorrow. But there is still a long way to go. Decathlon is different every time.

Owens-Delerme leads surprisingly – Neugebauer ninth

After Warner’s exit, Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico surprisingly leads with 4,606 points ahead of Canadian Pierce Lepage (4,485) and Zach Ziemek from the USA (4,469). After the first day, the best of the four German starters is US student Leo Neugebauer (Leinfelden-Echterdingen) in ninth place (4,298). Kai Kazmirek (LG Rhein-Wied) is 15th (4,165). Tim Nowak (Ulm) is in 20th place (3,989). World record holder Kevin Mayer (France, 4,372) is sixth, but like Kaul, he has his strengths on the second day.

After an average start – 11.17 seconds over 100 m, 7.36 m in the long jump and 14.52 m in the shot put – Kaul really got going in the high jump. The 24-year-old jumped a season best of 2.05 m, still had room for improvement, but ended the high jump competition early to avoid risk of injury. Kaul recently struggled with foot problems.

The decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene starts with Niklas Kauls unloved discipline, the sprint over 100 m. All three runs in full length.

After the first two disciplines, a group of favorites is already emerging. The respective best long jumps of Pierce Lepage (7.54 m), Ashley Maloney (7.46 m), Damian Warner (7.87 m) and Kevin Mayer (7.51 m).

The respective best long jump of the four German decathletes Kai Kazmirek (7.49 m), Tim Nowak (7.13 m), Niklas Kaul (7.09 m) and Leo Neugebauer (7.46 m).

The third decathlon discipline is shot put. The best attempt of the favorites and the four DLV starters.

In the fourth decathlon discipline, the high jump, the DLV starters did well. Niklas Kaul and Tim Novak jumped 2.05m, as did leading Canadian Damien Warner.

World Cup debutant Neugebauer convinced

World Cup debutant Neugebauer, on the other hand, started the competition very well, was already the best German after the first two disciplines (11.07 seconds/7.46 m) and came close to his personal best with the shot of 15.83 m (16. 00 m). In the high jump, however, Neugebauer had to cope with a setback and only jumped 1.99 m. His best performance this season is 2.07 m. “That was a bit disappointing. But I did pretty well in the 400 m race.” , said Neugebauer, who ran 48.34 seconds.

I don’t let anything bring me down. The decathlon is like a marathon. You have to fight to the end, then you have a good score at the end.

Kazmirek with back problems

Veteran Kazmirek meanwhile struggled with problems. “I felt embarrassed at night and had a lot of back pain all the time,” said the 31-year-old, who won bronze at the 2017 World Cup in London.

On the final day of the World Cup, 110 m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the final 1,500 m are on the program (from 6.35 p.m. CEST, live on sportschau.de).
