The coronavirus caused the death of 25 more people in the province of Hubei, China, increasing the number of deaths in the country to 132 due to the outbreak that started in the city of Wuhan.
The same source, cited by the agency France-Presse, said that there are 840 new cases diagnosed in this province, increasing to more than 5,300 the total number of infected people across the country.
German health authorities confirmed three more cases of contagion with the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) detected in China, increasing the number of people infected in that country to four.
Germany is the second country in Europe affected by the outbreak, after France.
The disease has been identified as a new type of coronavirus, similar to atypical pneumonia, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which between 2002 and 2003 killed 650 people in mainland China and Hong Kong.
Symptoms associated with the infection are more severe than the flu and include fever, pain, malaise and breathing difficulties, such as shortness of breath.
In addition to the mainland of China, France and Germany, cases of infection have also been reported in Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Vietnam, Nepal, Malaysia, Australia and Canada.
Chinese officials have admitted that the virus’s ability to spread has been strengthened.
Infected people can transmit the disease during the incubation period, which takes between one day and two weeks, without the virus being detected.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will send international experts to China as soon as possible to work with Chinese experts in the study and containment of the virus.
Several countries have already started repatriating citizens of Wuhan, a city that was quarantined last week, with exits and entrances banned by authorities for an indefinite period.
A plane chartered by the Japanese government carrying 216 people evacuated from the city has already arrived in Tokyo.
However, a plane with US diplomatic personnel and other US citizens has also left Wuhan and is expected to arrive at Ontario International Airport in California on Wednesday.
Canada, on the other hand, is considering all options for repatriating the 126 Canadians living in the region and the European Union will send two planes between Wednesday and Friday, which are expected to repatriate 250 French and 100 other European citizens.
The Portuguese Minister of Health, Marta Temido, assured that hospitals in Portugal are prepared to deal with an eventual epidemic and that the situation is being treated in a “quiet, but strict” way.
