Deadly Attack on Russian Border City Belgorod by Ukraine Sparks Tensions – 20 Dead, 111 Injured

Russia said that Ukraine launched an “indiscriminate” attack on the Russian border city of Belgorod on the 30th and accused Kiev of using cluster bombs, causing about 20 deaths and 111 injuries. According to reports from Reuters and AFP, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a “terrorist attack” on civilians in Belgorod today.

At an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council called for by Russia, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya claimed that Ukraine’s targets were a sports center, an ice rink and a university. Nebanzia also said, “In order to increase the casualties of the terrorist attack, they (Kiev) used cluster bombs.” He also said: “(This was) a deliberate and indiscriminate attack on civilian targets.”

The state-run Russian News Agency (RIA) quoted the Kremlin as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent a health and emergency rescue team to Belgorod, about 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

There was no immediate official comment from Kiev authorities, but Ukrainian news outlet RBC-Ukraine cited unnamed sources as saying that Ukrainian troops turned their artillery fire towards Belgorod in response to Russia’s large-scale attack on several Ukrainian cities the day before. bombing campaign.

Separately, the news website Ukrainska Pravda quoted an unnamed security source as saying that the destruction of civilian infrastructure (in Belgorod) was attributed to “unprofessional behavior of Russian air defense forces. and deliberate and calculated provocations”.

The day before, Ukraine said Russian missile attacks on several of its cities had killed at least 39 people and injured dozens more.

Hours after the Belgorod attack, Ukraine said that two Russian S-300 missiles hit the center of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, injuring 21 people, including two 16-year-olds. and a 14-year-old boy.

The Russian army said it had “carried out 50 collective attacks and one large-scale attack” on Ukrainian military installations in the past week, adding that “all targets were hit”. The United Nations condemned the attacks and said they must stop “immediately”.
