Dead Island 2 – Release date, gameplay, story and everything we know so far

PREVIEW – Dead Island 2 is back from the dead and a lot has changed since we last saw it.

Dead Island 2 was revealed at Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live. After years of speculation, delays, internet whispers, and some pretty significant Dead Island 2 leaks, developer Dambuster Studios has finally given the game the reintroduction it has always deserved.

As we already knew, we can expect a dystopian sandbox vision of Los Angeles, aptly named HELL-A due to the hordes of evil zombies in charge. Thankfully, only you and a select few are immune to the undead apocalypse and you have no choice but to save the day and humanity. In Dead Island 2, you can do all this and more, in single-player and even three-player co-op mode – read what we know so far about Dead Island 2.

Dead Island 2 release date

Dead Island 2’s release date is February 3, 2023, meaning the action horror-RPG adventure will arrive nearly 11 and a half years after its predecessor. The first Dead Island was released on September 7, 2011 in the United States and two days later in Europe.

Dead Island Platforms 2

Dead Island 2 PC – one of the most sought-after terms among Dead Island desktop fans gained a lot of momentum after the Dead Island 2 leak on August 18, when an Amazon listing detailed the platforms, as story details deleted and the new screenshots. Of course, PC isn’t the only confirmed platform for Dead Island 2, with the game also coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.

Dead Island 2 trailer

Aside from the now iconic E3 2014 zombie transformation video below, it’s been pretty quiet on the front of the Dead Island 2 trailer for a while now. However, at Gamescom 2022, Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios presented us with a new reveal trailer and some brand new gameplay footage.

Let’s take a look at the development path. First, here’s the Dead Island E3 2014 announcement trailer to refresh our memory.

Next up is the new Dead Island 2 reveal trailer that was shown during the live opening night of Gamescom 2022.

Finally, here’s the Dead Island 2 gameplay trailer to give you an idea of what to expect from the game when it launches in 2023 as one of the most anticipated upcoming Xbox Series X titles and titles coming to PS5.

Dead Island 2 harc

Deep Silver announces that Dead Island 2 combat is building “the most intense, visceral and bloody first-person experience possible”. Along with that, there are plenty of weapons to be found in Dead Island 2’s six playable characters, each with their own unique personality and dialogue. Even better, each character’s abilities are fully customizable, with a new skill system designed to instantly rewrite characters to try out new builds. Additionally, Deep Silver promises Dead Island 2 will feature “the most advanced dismemberment system in games,” so we suspect this game won’t be for the faint of heart.

Dead Island 2 cooperative game mode

Dead Island 2’s co-op mode sounds good, and while zombie slash ’em up can be enjoyed in full single player mode, teaming up with two mates in teams of three sounds a lot of fun. According to Deep Silver, “replay value is guaranteed” as teams explore Dead Island 2’s “thrilling” pulp story and interact with different characters in the “twisted” universe. It is not yet clear what the co-op mode will look like in Dead Island 2, if it will be available from the beginning or if it will be integrated into the story mode as Dying Light 2 has yet to be seen.

Dead Island 2 development

Dead Island 2 has had a long development journey up to this point, to say the least. Originally led by Yager Development, work on the sequel would begin in 2012 before the project was officially announced at E3 2014. The development was taken over by Sumo Digital the following year, before Dead Island 2’s primary care moved to current developers Dambuster Studios three years ago, in 2019.

Given the little information that was released during the game’s development, it’s hard to tell how much the game has changed since its inception. Now that Dead Island 2’s release date has been confirmed, we can obviously expect to see a lot more ahead of release.
