Dead blue shark on Schiermonnikoog

A dead blue shark has washed up on the beach of Schiermonnikoog. It is probably a pregnant female. The finding of the dead fish is special, because it swims in oceans.

Photographer Foppe Peter Schut found the shark on the northwest side of the island. “I walked past it with my wife, about a hundred meters,” he says.

“With the binoculars I saw something light gray, with a strange shape. It looked like a seal, but one of the fins was up. Weird, so I said: we have to go there.”

Dozens of eggs

Schut noticed that the shark was still completely intact. “The gulls are often right next to it, they often pick their eyes out. He had been lying on dry land for a while.”

Shark expert Paddy Walker thinks after examining photos that the female was pregnant and may have had dozens of eggs, reports Omrop Fryslân. The dead blue shark is about 1.95 meters long. Today the fish is going to Naturalis in Leiden for research.

Last year, a live blue shark washed up on the beach of Ouddorp in South Holland.
