De Zerbi to journalists: “You are not all honest and competent, it is you who have made me become divisive”

Roberto De Zerbi gamer or achiever? Neither of the two: simply, De Zerbi is De Zerbi and does not want to be used for a clash between factions “that you journalists in Italy invented”. On the eve of his return to his family Brighton and the Roma, the coach from Brescia responded in Italian to a question: why is he perceived as a divisive coach in Italy? His response is an outburst that immediately went viral: “I’m not the person who is in the middle and who loves grey, I try to take a position, to always be correct with everyone but I like to choose a side, choose who to be and choose how I should behave. I believe that not everyone in your category is correct, there are many of your incorrect colleagues and I never made the compromise they wanted, I never called them, I never became friends with them and they accentuated this divisiveness of mine, creating comparisons and factions between gamers and achievers, when I have always tried to work with passion while respecting everyone.”

De Zerbi between game players and results players

Anyone who knows De Zerbi knows well what his thoughts are on the highest division of Italian football between coaches who preach aesthetics (players, in fact) and those who exalt the pragmatics of the result (results enthusiasts, of course). The former coach of Benevento and Sassuolo is the synthesis of the two philosophies: he wants to achieve results through play, he asks for ball possession but also for verticalisation at the right moment. And if in Italy he is naturally compared to the game players, he refuses party jackets: above all, he does not want to be used in the battle to support one coach against the other. This is what De Zerbi means when he says “I tried to work with passion while respecting everyone”.

De Zerbi: “Not everyone respects me”

“I have always respected you too – added the coach Brighton – there are not always honest, correct or even competent people in your category, and when I found these people I never looked for the meeting point to necessarily get along. You can write what you want, clearly I’m sorry because my family is in Italy and I don’t find it right to be so divisive for nothing, but I do my own thing. The way you tell your truths is what makes me divisive. I have always respected you, however there is no correctness in some of your judgments. Many of you do this with other coaches too. In my country you have accentuated this division by talking about gamers and achievers, even in a non-transparent way. That I am divisive for the choices I make, for the game I play, for the positions I have taken in the past, this means nothing, but that it has been accentuated by your colleagues… I respect almost all of your category, those who don’t respect others I don’t respect them either, I don’t talk to them, I don’t give interviews and I don’t make compromises.”
