Days after the malfunction, KLM is still looking for an unknown number of remaining suitcases | NOW

Not all suitcases that were left behind at Schiphol this week due to a malfunction in the baggage system have been returned to the owners. KLM airline is still working to get all suitcases to the right destination. It is unclear how many suitcases are involved.

A KLM spokesperson said that it concerns a “large number” of suitcases that still have to be sent, but could not give an exact figure. “Part of it has been sent back and we are doing our utmost to get the other suitcases to the passengers as soon as possible.”

On Wednesday, a problem arose with Schiphol’s baggage system. A day later, KLM decided that transfer passengers at Schiphol who were traveling between two European destinations could not check in checked baggage.

This had to provide space to be able to send as many suitcases as possible that had been left behind as a result of the malfunction. On Friday it was again possible for all KLM passengers to check in luggage. KLM emphasized that the baggage system is not managed by the airline itself.

Due to staff shortages, crowds and many missed flights, there have been problems with baggage at Schiphol for some time. As a result, a large heap of orphaned suitcases recently emerged at the airport, sometimes containing thousands of pieces of luggage.
