David Bowie: Why were you terrified of playing in Italy?

For a long time, our country has been malvisto by the artists who counted the most international scenes brilliant. Riots, riots e scuffles were customary to the shows of the rock monsters which, in a short time, began to to exclude Italy from the locations of their tours. For the most devoted fans, it will spontaneously help to think about what happened to the Led Zeppelin, for example, but the legendary Hard Rock band was not the only one step away suddenly from the Bel Paese. The White Duke, David Bowie, in fact, did not perform even once in Italy during the golden years of his career; although his concerns had arisen indirectly, during a conversation with Lou Reed.

As mentioned, the most brilliant years for Rock saw Italy excluded systematically from the great kermesse of the bands and leading artists of that period. As for David Bowie, his relationship with the Italian peninsula was able to change the March 25, 1987. This is a very important date for our local Rock music fans. It was only then, in fact, that the White Duke decided to face up to the Italian audiences, going on stage at Piper Club From Rome; nerve center of the Capitoline youth culture and beyond. On that occasion, David Bowie gave the audience a performance memorable, albeit short, performing only two pieces, Bang Bang e 87 And Cry.

David Bowie’s tour in Italy

David Bowie’s rapprochement with Italy was not limited to that single appearance. In that same venue, in fact, the legendary singer of Heroes announced his neighbor and, then, imminent debut on the Italian stages, not reserving the right to answer some questions from fans and journalists in raptures. The Italian kermesse of the White Duke was inaugurated on 9 June 1987 in Florence, at the Stadio Comunale, and then arrived the following day in Milan, at the Meazza Stadium, on 15 and 16 June in Rome, at the Flaminio Stadium and on 18 July at the Stadio Municipal of Turin. The tour, of course, turned out to be a success extraordinary, while not lacking disputes. During the second date in Rome, in fact, some “autonomous” launched themselves into breakthroughs violent, throwing tear gas and pushing Bowie to to interrupt the set.

Since then, however, David Bowie would never fail to include Italy in his tours. The Duke would return to inflame the public of the Bel Paese in 1990 for 4 dates on the occasion of Sound + Vision. The following year he would land in Italy for Tin Machine’s It’s My Life Tour and, then, after a break, again in 1996 with the Outside Tour, in 1997 for the Earthling and in 1999 for a single promotional concert of HOURS, at the Smeraldo Theater in Milan. At the dawn of the Third Millennium, Bowie arrived in Italy on July 15, 2002 in Lucca. The Duke’s last concert in Italy was held on October 23, 2003 at the Fila Forum in Assago.
