Data theft online: beware of the “Zalando scam”

Customers of the second-hand portal Vinted currently have to beware of scammers. Once again Spiegel and the portal Watchlist Internet report, there have been several attempts at fraud with a new scam in which those affected are suddenly presented with a Zalando package instead of second-hand goods. You have little time to defend yourself against the scam.

And this is how the new scam works: on the second-hand portal, customers buy clothing, shoes or accessories that are supposedly remarkably cheap and are declared as new. After paying a private seller, however, they receive a package from Zalando – together with the invoice. It is then relatively easy for scammers to make off with the money paid on Vinted. Because when making a payment on the platform, according to the Vinted regulation, customers only have two days to report a problem. After this period, the money is released to the sellers.

The scam also appeared on other platforms, such as Willhaben and Ebay, as Watchlist Internet reports.

What can those affected do?

After receiving the Zalando package, customers should contact Vinted’s buyer protection immediately. To do this, they must click the “I have a problem” button on the platform. Customers should also contact Zalando and send the goods back. A police report should also be filed.
