From rural residence to the next city – there is a lot of commuting in Baden-Württemberg. Which place does Stuttgart occupy and which other cities stand out.

Baden-Württemberg is known for being a commuter country: of the 20 cities with the highest number of commuters nationwide, three are in the southwest: Stuttgart, Mannheim and Karlsruhe, as announced Tuesday by the state statistical office. The basis is the figures for the year 2021, which were brought together by the Länder in a joint calculation.

According to the state office, most commuters in Germany are drawn to the Bavarian state capital Munich, followed by Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin; Stuttgart is in seventh place. In Baden-Württemberg, Freiburg, Ulm and Heidelberg attract many workers from other places as well.

Over 3 million leave home for work

The largest workflow, with the largest number of people employed, is found in the southwest, crossing the Rhineland-Palatinate state border from Ludwigshafen to Mannheim. According to information, a total of 3.76 million people in Baden-Württemberg left their place of residence to go to work last year.

Since Tuesday, stakeholders have been able to see how many people move from their community or how many people move there due to their work in an interactive commuter atlas for the whole of Germany. The statistical offices of the federal Länder have created a joint commuter calculation for the first time.
