In Darmstadt, planning has begun to develop the former area of the Cambrai-Fritsch barracks. The extended tram line could not be ready until mid-2024 at the earliest.
When the first people move into their apartments in the Ludwigshöhviertel on the site of the former Cambrai-Fritsch barracks in three years’ time, they will not be able to take the tram to the city center. Because the planned extension of tram line 3 through the new development area is to begin in mid-2024 at the earliest. This has been announced by representatives of the city and the public transport company Heag mobilo. The completion date in mid-2025 is cited as an “ambitious target” by those involved in the project.
Tram line 3 currently ends at the Lichtenbergschule. In addition to the Academy of Music and Music, the trains turn to return to the city center. The plan is to run line 3 through the previous barracks area and via Cooperstraße to Heidelberger Straße. This is where the tracks for tram lines 1, 6, 7 and 8 run to and from Eberstadt and Alsbach.
Planning for the construction of the new route began in the municipal mobility office and at Heag mobilo in the summer. Institutions, associations and citizens’ initiatives are to be informed about the project on Wednesday. The city parliament is expected to make a decision on various construction variants by spring 2021. After that, work will be carried out on the design and approval planning so that the plan approval procedure can begin in 2022 and the funding application can be submitted in summer 2022. By the “earliest possible start of construction” in mid-2024, the implementation planning, the tender and the award of the contract for the infrastructure project would have to take place.
the quarter
The Ludwigshöhviertel is being built on the site of the former Cambrai-Fritsch barracks south of the Bessungen district. A new residential quarter with around 1,400 apartments for around 3,000 people is to be built on the 34-hectare site. The first people should move into their apartments in 2023. One tram stop each is to be built on Quartiersplatz and on a promenade in the south. From mid-October The website www.anbconnection-lhv.de informs about the planned development of the quarter by tram. jjo

Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) said at the presentation of the plans that the project was “about more than the extension of the tram to Heidelberger Strasse”. According to Partsch, the structural linkage of the five tram lines is intended to “improve the quality of public transport in the city overall”. For the people from Bessungen, Eberstadt and the city center, there would be new connection possibilities.
However, the construction of a new turning loop at the confluence of Cooperstrasse and Heidelberger Strasse is controversial because a number of trees would have to be cleared. Alternatively, the existing Wendeschleife on Ludwighöhstrasse could be upgraded and expanded to double tracks. From Partsch’s point of view, this would be the “ideal variant”.
The new Heag-mobilo managing director Bettina Clüsserath said that in the future, trams could bypass Heidelberger Straße via Ludwigshöhstraße with a double-track turning loop.
Information events and the publication of leaflets and other notices are also planned in the future. The contact person at Heag mobilo is citizen officer Kevin Zdiara.
