Six years after the laying of the foundation stone, the new central building of the Darmstadt Clinic was completed and opened in downtown Darmstadt.
The construction work on the health campus in downtown Darmstadt took a few years, but the opening ceremony – due to the corona, without drinking champagne and sandwiches – only a few minutes: Six years after the groundbreaking ceremony, Darmstadt’s Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens), head of the clinic André Schellenberg, will have it on Thursday afternoon (CDU) and the two managing directors Clemens Maurer and Nawid Khaladj put the new central building of the Darmstadt Clinic into operation.
The quartet of men only met briefly at the main entrance to cut a ribbon, and after just under half an hour they all parted again. The Hessian Minister for Social Affairs and Integration, Kai Klose (Greens), conveyed his congratulations on the commissioning in a video message.

With the new building, the municipal clinic now has 1,000 beds, including 58 intensive care beds, 25 operating theaters and seven delivery rooms. The state of Hesse sponsored the extensive construction project, which cost 195 million euros, with around 67 million euros.
Lord Mayor Partsch expressed the importance of optimal health care that is currently becoming “painfully” clear. The performance of employees around the clock, especially in the corona pandemic, “cannot be overestimated”. Without the clinic, patient care, in the crisis team and also during the construction and operation of the vaccination center in the Darmstadtium congress center, could not have been provided.
Darmstadt Clinic
In southern Hesse Darmstadt Clinic is the municipal maximum care provider and the only hospital with the most comprehensive emergency care.
With 3350 employees the clinic is also the largest municipal employer in Darmstadt.
For years the clinic is in the black. In 2019, the hospital closed with a result of more than five million euros. The management also expects a positive result for 2020. jjo

After the Fair particle acceleration facility in Wixhausen, which is still under construction, the new clinic has been the largest construction project in the city for years, said clinic director Schellenberg, who also heads the clinic’s supervisory board.
A new era begins for the Darmstadt Clinic with the commissioning of the new building. Because for the first time all somatic clinics are located in one location and the hospital now also has a central entrance. Clinic managing director Clemens Maurer said that the clinic management was “incredibly proud” that it was possible to move into the new central building on time during ongoing operations in the middle of the corona pandemic and to stay within budget. In addition, as the coordinating hospital, the clinic has managed the distribution of all Covid and Non-Covid patients in the supply area of South Hesse to all hospitals in recent months.
The clinic alone has invested 128 million euros from its own resources in the new hospital building. In total, the clinic and the state are spending 240 million euros on the new hospital building, state-of-the-art medical technology, digitization, the completed helipad and other infrastructure projects. All patient rooms have barrier-free bathrooms and are furnished almost like hotel rooms.
In the future, 20 clinics and institutes will work together at one location. The old location in the Eberstadt district has already been given up. As reported, more than 400 apartments are to be built there.
