Daniel Barenboim: “Music exists in space”

As of today, music will be played again in the Golden Hall: the Vienna Philharmonic will perform the first concert after Corona under Daniel Barenboim.

Music has to be played live and listened to live, ”Daniel Barenboim is convinced. In the midst of the corona crisis, the general music director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden was one of the first artists who pleaded not to forget art. On the occasion of his concert by the Staatskapelle Berlin, which was broadcast live on television and was held in front of empty crowds of audiences, on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, he pointed out that he heard a lot about health and economy. Both are important, but culture should not be forgotten. An appeal that was soon picked up by politicians in Germany. Why was it not an issue until then? “Because politicians have no idea about it,” is Barenboim’s unmistakable answer.

Had the corona virus not brought the music association’s music festival planned for May and June to a standstill, Barenboim would have been represented in this context with the Vienna Philharmonic with Mahler and a Beethoven piano sonata cycle. Nothing will come of these projects. Since it is known that concerts can now take place in front of a hundred people, the music club has been working feverishly on a replacement program. And that is now the case: with no less than 42 concerts over 22 days, which the Vienna Philharmonic under Daniel Barenboim is now starting.
