JAKARTA – Scientists reveal a dangerous natural phenomenon linked to the incident of people drowning on the South Coast of Java which is often associated with myth Nyi Roro Kidul.

Nyi Roro Kidul is a woman who is believed to ‘rule’ the south coast. In order to avoid harm and ensure the safety of residents, a number of communities hold rituals offering worship to Nyi Roro Kidul. This ritual is called larung offerings or sea alms.
Some people also believe that the ban on wearing green clothing on the south coast is because Nyi Roro Kidul likes it. It is believed that people who wear this clothes will float away and drown because they are kidnapped by the queen.
As reported by Conversations, scientifically, cases of death on the south coast are actually related to the rip current phenomenon (backflow or also known as rabak current).
This current occurs due to the meeting of two longshore currents which then turn quickly towards the sea.
This case does not only occur in Indonesia, but also throughout the world. In the United States, deaths due to backflow can reach 35 people per year between the ages of 10-29 years, which is higher than shark attacks.
In Australia, cases reach 26 people per year. Most of these people don’t know that they are being swept away by the current.
Cases of death due to backflow also often affect tourists who are not familiar with the area.
For this reason, tourists should recognize the character of the beach area and increase their vigilance to prevent the risk of being swept away by the current. Steps for dealing with backflow at the beach must also be understood so that this incident does not result in death.
Not all beaches experience the backflow phenomenon. This is influenced by bathymetric conditions (beach bottom and depth) and other oceanographic factors. Backflow can also occur several times at different points on one beach.
