Theater life is beginning to take a turn. On August 3, the Daile Theater also begins its 102nd season. Culture lovers are expected to have a bright season with several new productions and performances that have not been shown to the public due to the pandemic, TV3 News reports.
The Daile Theater opened the new season already on August 3 in the newly created Daile Garden. With the collaboration of Olga Dreģe and pianist Edgars Cīrulis, a special concert program dedicated to the centenary of the theater “Canon of Dailes” has been opened.
Last year, the theater failed to celebrate its centenary, and this season can also be called an anniversary. It will be echoed in a series of seven concerts “Canon of Dailes”, in which visitors will be able to go to the mysterious world of poetry and art, accompanied by piano music played by pianists. In the center of the stage, none other will shine than Daile’s main values - the outstanding theater actors.
We are convinced that Dailes Kanons will also acquire the status of Latvian cultural canon in the foreseeable future. But the main idea was to show our canonical values, our actors. And so we had a concert cycle “Canon of Dailes”, where there are seven programs. These are all one-off events, they must be seen. They will not be independent in our repertoire, ”says Viesturs Kairišs, the artistic director of Daile Theater.
Along with the “Canon of Dailes”, it is planned to start the season with performances created during the pandemic, but not yet reaching the audience. On August 12, director Laura Groza’s tragic comedy “Consent” will premiere, but this week Regina Lake’s novel “Zemdegas” will reach the audience.
“The show will feature music by Jānis Šipkēvics, and we have used the original literary language of Lake Regina. And thanks to Dmitry Petrenko, in my opinion, absolutely subtle and nuanced work, the actors deal with it absolutely organically, ”says Justine Kļava, the leading playwright of Daile Theater.
At the end of August, Māra Zālīte’s latest play “Smiļģis” directed by Viesturs Kairiss, which was not shown in public last year, will have its premiere last year. In the performance, Daile’s father will be portrayed by six theater actors. Smilga’s mother will be the legendary Olga Dreģe.

This autumn, the repertoire of Daile Theater will be supplemented by several new productions. In September, the premiere of the drama “Rhinoceros”, staged in the Great Hall of the Daile Theater by Hungarian director Ildiko Gāšpāra, is expected. The repertoire will also be supplemented by Regnārs Vaivars’ “Three Friends” and other performances, a total of 15 performances.-
The influx of premieres has already reached the first years of Eduards Smiļģis, when he staged up to 40 premieres a year. In any case, everything is very much intense, ”says Kairišs.
This season, spectators should note that, like other theaters, tickets are only sold in Daile in a secure event format, ie only to people with a Covid-19 digital certificate. The theater hopes that at least in this format it will be possible to run the season to the end.
“We think that nothing will change, and we believe that the government’s promises that vaccinated and diseased spectators will not be restricted, that we will be able to sit next to each other,” says Juris Žagars, director of Daile Theater.
At the same time, the theater building itself will undergo transformations this season. It is planned to reconstruct and expand the Small Hall to 370 seats. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of this year.
