D66 leader Jetten: strategic vote for Groenlinks-PvdA is a lost vote

A left-wing cabinet is really not possible, says Jetten in conversation with political reporter Floor Bremer. “A vote for Groenlinks-PvdA is therefore a lost vote. The only way to stop a right-wing cabinet is to build a strong cabinet from the middle. With D66 from the middle.”

Bad in the polls

D66 now still has 24 seats in the House of Representatives. The party is no longer in good shape in the polls: D66 would end up with 8 seats. Yet Jetten still thinks he can win over voters with his progressive story – with attention to climate, Europe and education.

And he warns: “An extreme right-wing cabinet is dangerous for our economy. You get Wilders for free. It includes parties that are against the euro and want to close borders. Jetten further says that D66 is still the party for education. D66 had a Minister of Education in the Rutte IV cabinet with Minister Dijkgraaf. But there are still major problems, such as the teacher shortage and the problems for the so-called unlucky generation. And the level of reading and writing has also deteriorated in this cabinet.

“We have had to make up for years of depletion in education. Education is always our number one priority. We want to structurally improve salaries for teachers and major steps have already been taken. A lot has also been done to reduce the workload.”

Tough negotiations

After all, Jetten is aiming for the most progressive and green coalition agreement possible. “It will be very tough negotiations.”

He is also critical of the leaders VVD and NSC. “VVD is flirting with Wilders and is taking a very wrong course on migration. Pieter Omtzigt is more in line with the SGP on women’s and gay rights.”
