Registrations of new cars increased year on year for the first time this year. Several brands benefited, Hyundai took second place thanks to growth, Mercedes took a great fourth place.

The Czech market with new cars surprised in March 2021. There were 20,053 passenger cars registered with us, which is an incredible jump of 46.5% compared to last March. This follows from the statistics of the Association of Car Importers.
March was thus the most successful month of this year, in January and February registrations did not exceed 15,000. The year-on-year view already compares the two months affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The results were already hit last March by measures against the spread of insidious disease, such as closed car showrooms or limited working hours for authorities. The year-on-year increase in this view thus means a positive outlook for the coming months.

On the other hand, if we do not count the year 2020, it was still the worst March since 2014, when 16,576 cars were registered. In the years following, March statistics regularly reported over 21,000 registrations, often more.
The year-on-year jump in registrations was influenced by the success of several brands. Thanks to a year-on-year increase of 69.9%, Hyundai moved to second place, ahead of Volkswagen, which also grew decently, but its 54.5% was not enough for Korean competition this time. Mercedes-Benz rose to fourth place with an incredible year-on-year jump of 89.5%.
However, the highest increase is reported by Ford, which recorded more than three times higher registrations than a year ago, with 847 registered pieces it is again among the best, overall fifth. Compared to March last year, the ninth overall Seat also helped (by 126.7%).
By contrast, the 10th Dacia reports a drop of 11.7%, proving that interest in cheap cars is typically declining during the crisis. In short, customers of an affordable brand often prefer to forgive such an investment. A slight decrease was also recorded by the parent Renault, by 1.8%. Škoda then grew more slowly than the overall market, with year-on-year growth of 36.4%.
After a long time, Nissan got into the top 20 again, with 196 registrations, it took nineteenth place. Only 99 cars were enough for Fiat to finish twentieth, which still proves that car sales are still not the same. However, the Italian brand improved by 28.6% year-on-year in March.
