Cyclists collided with a truck at the Around Luxembourg race

The final, fifth stage of the race Around Luxembourg was marked by a mass accident caused by a truck. A truck parked in a corner forced the driver to brake hard on the descent about 67 kilometers before the finish, which led to several falls.

Due to injuries after the fall, Yevgeny Gidič from the Astana team could not finish the race, for example, the duo of the Bahrain-McLaren worldtour team Fred Wright and Santiago Buitrago were involved in the accident.

This was not the first similar incident in this year’s Around Luxembourg race. On Wednesday, cyclists staged an impromptu protest against parked vehicles in the first stage, including a bus in a steep descent. Prior to Saturday’s event, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said it would address safety conditions in Luxembourg.

The race was won by the Italian Diego Ulissi, the Czech driver Petr Vakoč lost 50 seconds to him in ninth place.
