Cycling More Instead of Driving: International City Cycling Campaign Saves 20 Tons of CO2

Cycling more instead of driving – that is the aim of the international city cycling campaign. Five municipalities from the region took part – and saved a total of 20 tons of CO2.

For three weeks, people from Mllheim, Neuenburg, Eschbach, Bad Bellingen and Schliengen gave up their cars and clocked up kilometers by bike in the international city cycling campaign – for example to work or school, on shopping trips or in their free time. In the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, the campaign ended at the beginning of July, in the district of Lrrach it ended on Friday.

In its third participation in the campaign, the city of Mllheim was able to improve slightly. For three weeks, 351 cyclists rode a total of 72,146 kilometers, which corresponds to a CO2 avoidance of twelve tons. On average, that’s 205.5 kilometers per participant. Last year it was 72,128 kilometers, but an average of 216 kilometers per wheel.

In addition to the experienced participant Mllheim, there were also two newcomers to the campaign, Eschbach and Neuenburg am Rhein. In Neuchâtel, 101 cyclists rode 24,376 kilometers. They saved four tons of CO2 in the process. On average, that’s 241 kilometers per participant. In Eschbach, ten people cycled 1476 kilometers, an average of 147.6 kilometers per person.

This year, the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald was in charge of the coordination. In this way, even more cyclists could be recruited for the campaign. A total of 32 towns and municipalities in the district were cycled simultaneously from June 19th to July 9th. In a comparison of the municipalities in the district, Eschbach was ranked 30th, Neuenburg came in 19th and Mllheim was eighth.

From the region, Bad Bellingen in the district of Lrrach took part in the city cycling campaign for the second time. The health resort was able to increase enormously compared to the previous year. This time, with 42 participants, 30 more people took part than in 2022. This time, the cyclists traveled more than twice as far at 9834 kilometers and thus saved two tons of CO2. On average, the participants drove 209 kilometers, last year it was 366 per capita.

Schliengen has ridden in the district of Lrrach for the third time, but enthusiasm for the campaign continues to wane, as it did last year. While around 140 participants cycled along in 2021, last year there were half as many and this time only 56 people who switched from the car to the bike from July 1st to 21st. They drove a total of 13,357 kilometers (2021: a good 25,000 kilometers, 2022: a good 20,000 kilometers) and saved two tons of CO2. The average distance driven by each driver was 252 kilometers. In the district ranking, Bad Bellingen and Schliengen took 14th and 13th place out of 16 municipalities.

The international Stadtradeln campaign aims to promote the bicycle as an environmentally and climate-friendly means of transport and encourage people to cycle more instead of driving. The goal is to cycle as many kilometers as possible in three weeks. A total of 2815 municipalities worldwide are taking part in the campaign, mainly from Germany. A few communities from France are taking part in the campaign. In small Luxembourg, a total of 56 participating communities are taking part in September, with Pomerode in Brazil and Newport News in the USA even having two communities from overseas. The German capital Berlin took first place, while Freiburg came in tenth.
