The school for babies up to three years old in La Florida remains closed due to the large water leaks suffered throughout the day this Wednesday. The educational center, immersed in works to renew its roof and floor, was forced to close several classrooms yesterday morning and, although the company awarded the renovation tried to put a stop to the incident with the installation of a tarp , the Department of Education finally decided to keep the facility closed at least for today, Thursday.

The problems began early in the morning. The abundant rain caused water to leak into certain classrooms of the building where the neighborhood study center is also located. The incident affected, at first, only some specific classrooms, which led the City Council, in coordination with the center, to close the affected rooms and relocate the babies to other classrooms where the activity continued to develop normally. .

At the same time, the Department of Education instructed the company in charge of the works to take measures to prevent water from continuing to enter the educational facilities. This instruction was addressed with the placement of a large blue awning on the roof of the property.

Although at first the placement of the tarp seemed to have improved the situation, the constant fall of abundant rain caused the situation to worsen beginning in the early afternoon. The water began to leak to other parts of the building and the council led by Lourdes García chose to order the closure of the school, at least during the day on Thursday, to look for other solutions that would allow the recovery of its activity as soon as possible.

The notice of the closure was conveyed to the affected families throughout the afternoon. At the same time, the company that began work on the center last July with a completion period of five months, made itself available to address other possible solutions. Specifically, they are choosing to place a waterproof material made of asphalt fabric. However, the City Council warns that its placement can only be done dry and could take longer than expected.

Sources from the Department of Education indicated that both Councilor Lourdes García and the city council staff are “continuously monitoring this incident”, in addition to maintaining constant contact with the center’s directors and the families.

Some of these families complained about a situation that, in their opinion, could be seen coming. “It took a long time to start the work and it was clear that if a storm caught us the water was going to come in,” a father commented this Wednesday.
