The three-time world champion from the Total Energies team at the first monument of the season was complicated by mechanical problems.

Sagan was in a good position before the collapse due to a defect and saved his strength at the end of the race. He later tried to rewind forward, but to no avail. Despite the fall of the chain, Mohorič triumphed by two seconds ahead of Sagan’s teammate Anthony Turgis. The Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel from the Alpecin-Fenix team finished in third place.

“The truth is, I’ve been thinking about these races all winter. The team came up with the idea to try out a telescopic seatpost, because these races end in a downhill.” said the 27-year-old winner after the victory for the American media. In his own words, at first he didn’t believe in this improvement: “At first, I didn’t think it could make a big difference in the descent. But after rehearsing in training, I was excited.”
