Cycling: “I am very grateful to be alive”

Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen gave his news on Tuesday, two weeks after his serious crash on the Tour of Poland.

Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen (23), seriously injured in a fall at the finish of the 1st stage of the Tour of Poland on August 5, is pleased to be still alive, in a statement from his team on Tuesday Deceuninck.

“The doctors and nurses in Katowice saved my life and I am grateful to them. I was operated on for five hours and it gave me a chance to stay alive. It was a difficult time for me in intensive care because I was afraid of not surviving, ”said Jakobsen, who suffered from numerous fractures to his face and skull.

“I will fight to recover”

Since last Wednesday, the Dutchman left Poland and was transferred to hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands, before finally being able to return home. “I have to rest a lot after this big concussion. In the coming weeks and months, I will have to undergo some operations and other treatments for my facial injuries. ”

“I am truly grateful to be alive. I can slowly look to the future and I will fight to recover, ”Jakobsen concluded.

Jakobsen crashed heavily on August 5, shortly before the finish line of the first stage of the Tour of Poland. Defending champion of the Netherlands, he was crushed by his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo) in a sprint at full speed, on a downhill false flat, and thrown over the safety barriers.
