Curtain Falls on Tour de France 2023: Jordi Meeus Surprises with Victory on Champs-Élysées

The curtain falls on the Tour de France 2023. The suggestive setting of the Champs-Élysées does not reserve scenarios other than the awaited sprint, but sees an outsider rejoice: Jordi Meeus. The BORA – hansgrohe rider, who before this stage boasted the sixth place in Bordeaux as his best finish in this Grande Boucle, takes a scalp of absolute prestige by mocking the great favorite Jasper Philipsen in the photo finish thanks to a big kidney failure. Dylan Groenewegen also on the podium, followed by Mads Pedersen, while Luca Mozzato gets his fourth top 10 in this edition (tenth ahead of Peter Sagan). Jonas Vingegaard enjoys the day of celebration which formalizes his second triumph in a row in the general classification. On the podium with the Dane a never tame Tadej Pogacar (again attacking today) and the other UAE Emirates Adam Yates.

The record

It’s the day of celebrations at the Tour de France 2023. In the finale there is a real race to take the prestigious scalp of the Champs-Élysées, but in the first part of the stage there is ample space for the parades of the protagonists of this edition. All this is anticipated by the playful shot of Victor Campenaerts, who accelerates to zero kilometer to honor the super fighter award, before getting up with a smile. After that, the celebrations begin. First the owners of the jerseys take the stage: Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, Jasper Philipsen and Giulio Ciccone. Then it’s up to the Austrlians, the French and some teams, such as Uno-X. Obviously there is ample space for the winner’s Jumbo-Visma, with van Hooydonck exposing the backbone of the absent Wout van Aert.

Pedersen and Skjelmose escort Ciccone: Giulio also wins the last GPM

At -75 is also placed the last GPM of this Grande Boucle, the Côte du Pavé des Gardes (4th category of 1.3 km at 6.5%). Ciccone, Pedersen and Skjelmose stretch on the group and pass first, to honor the polka dot jersey. At that point the race increases in intensity and Jumbo-Visma takes the lead once again, to face the first passage across the finish line in the lead (at -55). The race really begins, with several attempts to attack. And to make the difference is Tadej Pogacar, who places his jab on the first of the eight laps in the final circuit. Only Nathan van Hooydonck returns to Slovenian.

Resounding! Pogacar tries as soon as they enter the circuit: what an attack!

Their advantage remains slim, but the couple manages to stay ahead for almost two laps, despite the Jumbo’s rider not cooperating very effectively. The two are first picked up by a small group with Bettiol, Politt, Skjelmose, Welsford, Tejada, Lampaert, Edmondson and Kwiatkowski and then also by the rest of the group, at -33. In short, a new attempt is generated, starring Frederik Frison (Lotto Dstny), Simon Clarke (Israel – Premier Tech) and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar). The trio is resumed near the bell that inaugurates the last lap.

Bettiol tries too! What a shot, but Trentin closes it

Pogacar doesn’t give up and shoots again: the Slovenian goes, Alpecin closes

Many try in the final, but the very high speed and the long straights don’t favor the attackers. Vingegaard’s Jumbo slips off to avoid danger and to enjoy the last few meters in the parade. Thus we arrive at the flywheel. Mathieu van der Poel still squeezes as last man for Philipsen, but runs out of gas well away from the finish. At that point it is Groenewegen who launches the sprint. The Jayco rider is joined by Pedersen and overtaken by Philipsen, who seems launched towards pokerissimo. But Meeus arrives from the rear with a deadly ending and, after a moment of suspense, it’s a party for the BORA.
