Cumbre Vieja: The moving message of encouragement from the Gambia to those affected by the La Palma volcano | BE Las Palmas

Three years ago, volunteers from the NGO ‘Canarios Solidarios’ were building a nursery school in The Gambia. A project that was born with the aim of educating as many children as possible and that, year after year, continues to grow. This Monday they started a new school year with about 210 students, spread over five courses.

Carlos Sánchez, the president of the NGO, traveled a few days ago to the African country to carry out the census of students. In Gambia he saw the images of the La Palma volcano eruption and “I wanted to send a message of solidarity to our friends and partners from La Palma and I told the children if they would help me,” explains Carlos. With his mobile, the teacher he recorded the little ones asking them to repeat the phrases of the popular song ‘Palmero goes up to the palm.

“We did it on the way to Sanyang Beach, on an excursion we organized. I sent it to a closed group without the intention of sharing it on social media, but someone forwarded it and now the video has gone around the world“Carlos is surprised. On that trip, the president of the NGO took the opportunity to show his students videos of what is happening on La Palma,” the children are freaking out about the volcano, they keep asking me questions about whether that is normal in the Canary Islands.”
