The eruption of the La Palma volcano has resulted in the opening of the tenth mouth this Monday afternoon. The new cone has caused the evacuation of the population of Tacande, a neighborhood of the municipality of El Paso, which is located on the path of the lava.
The balance of evacuees leaves, at the moment, about 5,500 people evicted from their homes to which are added about a thousand residents of the Tacande neighborhood. Although no personal injuries have been recorded, the lava flows released by the volcano have devastated more than 300 houses in its path, as well as plots, crops and high voltage cables.
The magma tongues that run through the western part of the island advance at a speed close to 300 meters per hour towards the nuclei of La Bombilla and Puerto Naos, although they are still six kilometers from the coast. The time when the lava will reach the sea is unknown, but it is expected to occur this Tuesday around noon. The authorities have asked the population to follow at all times the instructions of emergency personnel in the face of evacuations.
The magma, which slowed down on Monday afternoon, is expanding on both sides of the sediment tongues, so the authorities have evacuated nearby populations to avoid further damage on the path of the lava to the coast.
An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 has shaken La Palma tonight, with an epicenter in the southeast of the municipality of Tazacorte and a focus three kilometers deep, according to the National Geographic Institute. The tremor was registered at 9:32 p.m., Canarian time, has not caused damage and has been felt in several municipalities on the island. The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcán) raises its magnitude to 4.1 degrees.
