Cuba expands reinforcement scheme against Covid-19 with local vaccines | News

The Cuban Ministry of Health announced this Wednesday the expansion of the booster scheme in immunization against Covid-19, after agreeing with the local scientific community on the advisability of applying the first booster dose with Cuban vaccines to adolescents and young people in ages between 12 and 18 years of age who have completed six months of having completed their primary scheme.

The new immunization campaign plans to cover nearly 848,000 people of these ages, which means an extension of the ages covered for it, since until now the booster dose was only applied to people over 19 years of age.

The use of Cuban vaccines has allowed that in the course of the last year almost 10 million Cuban men and women, out of a total population of 11.4 million, complete their vaccination schedule.

Until now, children under two years of age have not been immunized. However, that situation may change soon.

Another decision announced this Wednesday was the proposal for new clinical trials, this time in pediatric ages (infants), which are in the evaluation stage by the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed).

The new clinical trials will be carried out in three cities in the country and will use the Cuban vaccines Abdala and SoberanaPlus as immunogens.

At the same time, an intervention will begin, a phase that in the Cuban case precedes mass vaccination, with the age group between one year and one year, 11 months and 29 days.

It was also announced to extend the booster with the vaccines approved for it, with a second booster dose, to high-risk groups after six months of the first booster, for people over 60 years of age and immunocompromised people (cancer patients, chronic kidney diseases , transplant recipients, people with immunodeficiencies, among others).

At the close of April 11, 35.5 million doses administered with Cuban anticovid vaccines were accumulated in the country. A total of 6.4 million people have booster doses.
