Crocodile Crisis Erupts in Maoming City Following Heavy Flood: Authorities Launch Intense Operation

A crocodile crisis has erupted in the Chinese city of Maoming following a heavy flood that has ravaged the region.

Over 70 crocodiles, originally housed on a commercial crocodile farm, were given the opportunity to escape when a local lake overflowed its banks as a result of the flood.

It creates chaos in the city. The authorities have therefore launched an intense operation to get the crocodiles back, writes CNNwhich refers to several state media.

Warns

At one point, at least 69 adult crocodiles and six cubs were on the loose near the village of Peng Cun.

An emergency team was quickly deployed to track down the missing crocodiles, writes CNN. But the depth of the flood water has created enormous challenges for the operation.

The authorities have therefore warned residents not to leave their houses.

Highly sought after

A member of the emergency team said they may have to kill the crocodiles instead of catching them.

Video footage circulating on Chinese social media shows some of the crocodiles lurking behind a road sign near a road that appears to be completely flooded, according to CNN.

Crocodiles are sought after in China for their skin, as well as their meat, which is believed to have medicinal value in traditional Chinese medicine.

It is so far unclear how the authorities will solve the crocodile problem.
