Critical dismissed police chief leaves the police permanently

The dismissed police chief Fatima Aboulouafa is going to leave the police permanently. She writes that on the business network LinkedIn.

In conversations about her future with the police, she said she could not get any guarantee that she will not “be taken back at any time by the old boys networkshe writes.

Aboulouafa asked in June this year as a team leader in Leiden in a message on Instagram that public attention for racism, abuse of power and bullying within the police organization. She was suspended three months later because her criticism would cause “too much internal tension” within her own unit. Shortly afterwards it became clear that she was not allowed to return to the police unit The Hague, which includes Leiden.

Ahmed Marcouch, the mayor of Arnhem and former police officer, was subsequently hired as independent explorer to help Aboulouafa find a new position within the police. So ultimately without success.

In disrepute

The Hague Corps has been in the news several times recently due to problems in the organization. According to whistleblowers, there has been discrimination, excessive use of force and one sick culture.

For example, there was a fuss about an arrest of an 18-year-old man of Moroccan descent in October 2018, using disproportionate violence.

In December last year, the police in The Hague announced that four officers were punished because of the incident. Three of them were directly involved in the arrest. A fourth police officer later filmed the detainee in the cell and shared these images with other officers.

“Lower penalties for officers”

“Inappropriate behavior, in any form, will not be tolerated,” said police chief Paul van Musscher of The Hague after the sentences were imposed. However, the sentences have now been reduced on the advice of the state lawyer and police lawyers, reports NRC.

An agent who would be fired may stay. Another agent is not being redeployed and has received a suspended sentence.

During the internal investigation, the officers were transferred to Gouda, where they were given “extra duties”. According to them, this went against the principle of the protection of legitimate expectations, after which they objected to their sentences. The police say to the newspaper “to regret the state of affairs”.
