Portugal fell again in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup after being knocked out by Uruguay. Four years later, Portugal were held up by Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Ronaldo has racked up a total of eight goals in five editions of the World Cup. Interestingly, all of these goals were scored in the group stage, i.e. CR7 never managed to break through the opponent’s goal in the knockout stages.
World Cup 2022 being Ronaldo’s last chance to win the highest title in the world and he failed to do so. The five Ballon d’Or holder confirmed that his World Cup dream was over.
“Unfortunately yesterday the dream ended. There is no point in reacting hotly. I just want everyone to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, a lot has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal hasn’t changed at all. I’ve always fought for everyone’s goal and I will never leave my teammates and my country” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram after the duel Morocco vs Portugal.
