Colorful science

Whether the Wirecard affair, the bankruptcy of the Greensill Bank or the diesel scandal at Volkswagen: White-collar crimes have come into the public eye more and more in recent years. How can such machinations even come about and remain undetected for so long? What methods can be used to uncover white-collar crime? Prof. Dr. Karsten Munscheck is Professor of Controlling and Finance and Dean of Studies for Business Forensics at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden. In the current episode of the science podcast adhibeo he explains how one can find out about white collar criminals.

White-collar crime has increased in recent years: According to the study report “Espionage, sabotage and data theft – economic protection in the networked world” by the industry association for the digital economy (Bitkom), three out of four companies stated in 2019 that they were affected by white-collar crime. If these cases become public, this not only damages the image and the credibility of the respective company, it also results in costs in the billions – not only for the companies, but also for customers, investors or taxpayers. Bitkom surveys put the damage at around 100 billion damage per year for companies in Germany alone. Bitkom determines the damage on the basis of an anonymous survey of companies and also includes follow-up costs such as the costs of clarification and process costs.

In order to prevent white-collar crime, Prof. Dr. Karsten Munscheck company to rethink its risk management. So far, risk management has been distributed across various departments such as compliance, risk controlling, risk management, internal auditing or internal investigations. “Bundling these competencies enables more effective work,” explains Munscheck. “Since the facts are often very complex, one employee alone cannot have all the necessary knowledge to uncover these cases. Here, companies should form interdisciplinary teams in which the expertise of business forensic experts, controllers, IT specialists, internal investigators and lawyers are brought together. ”
