Crime Rates and Burglaries in Occitania: A Detailed Analysis and Statistical Trends

19,770 break-ins were recorded in Occitania in 2022 by national police services and gendarmerie units. A figure up from 2021, but down from 2016.

In 2022, 211,800 home burglaries were recorded in France. A higher figure than in 2021.

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) and the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI) have published a study which assesses the crime rate in France, at regional and departmental level.

In 2022, INSEE reports an average of 5.4 burglaries per 1,000 dwellings in Occitania, this is what INSEE Occitanie explains in a tweet: “19,770 burglaries or attempted burglaries were recorded”.

With this rate, the region is just below the national average of 5.8‰.

A figure up 6% compared to 2021 in Occitania where 18,650 burglaries had been reported.

However, in six years, burglaries have decreased by 34% in Occitania, from 30,000 in 2016 to less than 20,000 in 2022. A decrease which corresponds in particular to the period of confinement, but not that Bruno Bartocetti underlines (SGP Unit -FO font).

We have deployed a lot of resources in Occitania to fight against burglaries. There is also work that has been done over the long term and in this case, we can dismantle a network and bring down repeat offenders very severely.

In 2022, the rate of burglaries reaches 9‰ in Toulouse and 7‰ in Montpellier, Nîmes or Perpignan. These cities are all above the average for the region.

Insee d’Occitanie also points out that, in the region, “burglaries are more frequent in dense areas or areas with a high standard of living”. Conversely, in the less densely populated municipalities the burglary rates are lower. Figures that take the opposite of those found in France.

In the same way, at department levelthere are more burglaries in Haute-Garonne – the most populous department in the region with 1.47 million inhabitants recorded in 2023 – than in Lozère, which is much less dense (76,648 inhabitants in 2023).
