Cowboys sign QB Andy Dalton for one year

The former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, Andy Dalton signed for a year with the Dallas Cowboys, with a contract of up to seven million dollars, with three million insured, a source told the journalist from ESPN Adam Schefter.

The Twitter account of NFL announced the movement of the former quarterback that just last Thursday ended his employment relationship with Bengals.

Dalton, released from Cincinnati this week, already has a home in Dallas without the need to move, as he played at the collegiate level at the Christian University of Texas.

Dalton will give the Cowboys an experienced backup behind Dak Prescott. Before the contract was signed, the depth chart behind Prescott included Cooper Rush, Ben DiNucci and Clayton Thorson. The agreement between both parties will end a dramatic process, with Dalton leaving his first team,

In his first comments since he was cut this week, Dalton He mentioned that he believed the delay in his release hindered his chances of joining another team in the NFL.

“This year there were a fair amount of quarterbacks available,” Dalton said when asked about possible change options in a story published by Bengals.com on Friday night.

“I think it would have been different if I had been a free agent when the new league year started. I was still under contract and that hurt me.”

The league’s new year and the official opening of free agency was March 18. The Bengals, a traditionally conservative franchise on the open market, exhausted much of their salary capacity available to new players.

Cincinnati acquired LSU quarterback Joe Burrow as the first overall pick last week, making Dalton expendable. Dalton was to earn $ 17.7 million this final season from a six-year, $ 96 million contract. In nine seasons with the Bengals, Dalton had a 70-61-2 record and helped his team make the playoffs in each of his first five seasons, but he failed to win a playoff game. He holds the franchise record for touchdown passes at 204 and is second in yards passing (31,594), but was sent to the bench after a 0-8 start in the 2019 season.

He returned for the last five games and recorded Cincinnati’s two wins. According ESPN Stats & Information, Dalton’s total 40.1 QBR of 2019 ranked 27th out of 30 ranked quarterbacks.

Dalton’s addition does not affect the Cowboys’ feelings toward Prescott, who was awarded the franchise player label in March at a cost of $ 31.4 million. The Cowboys have wanted to sign Prescott on a multi-year deal since the last offseason, but have been unable to reach a deal that would make Prescott one of the highest-paid, if not the highest-paid, quarterbacks in the NFL.

Prescott has not missed a game in his career, but the Cowboys saw an opportunity to add Dalton’s talent. Cooper Rush has served as Prescott’s backup in the past three seasons, but has only thrown three passes. As a restricted free agent, Rush will earn 2.1 million in 2020.

The Cowboys also have quarterbacks like Clayton Thorson, who spent last season on the practice team, and Ben DiNucci. Dallas took DiNucci in the seventh round of last week’s draft.
