Covid incidence rate rises in Germany as vaccination stagnates

The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is hitting Germany hard. The cumulative incidence rate that measures the number of new COVID infections per 100,000 inhabitants in 7 days reached 201.1, according to data this Monday, which constitutes a record since the start of the pandemic a year and a half ago. The last peak of infections was registered on December 22, 2020, and placed the incidence rate at 197.6.

Although many more people are now vaccinated in Germany, the vaccination rate has stagnated at 67.1% (there are simply many people who refuse to be vaccinated), and these days the authorities are begging the population to mobilize. More than 16 million people over the age of 12 remain unvaccinated. “For the unvaccinated, the risk of becoming infected in the coming months is high,” warned Lothar Wieler last week, president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the reference body in monitoring the pandemic.

Concern of the authorities

Anticovid vaccination in Germany has remained at 67.1%; there are people who do not want to be vaccinated

Germany is also beginning to notice the overload in intensive care units in hospitals. According to the RKI’s daily report on Friday, November 5, 1,071 hospitalizations for coronavirus were reported and a cumulative rate of admissions in seven days of 3.91 per 100,000 inhabitants. The maximum number of hospitalizations was registered in the days around last Christmas, with a cumulative rate of 15.5.

In the federal state of Saxony, where the incidence rate is 491.3 (more than double the national average), unvaccinated people are subject to more restrictions as of Monday. Access to restaurants and indoor events is allowed only to people with the complete vaccination schedule or who present a certificate of having been cured of covid-19. Only children and people who cannot receive vaccines for medical reasons will be exempt.
