The United States, which had its first death linked to the new coronavirus, which causes the covid-19 disease in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 74,844 deaths out of 1,244,119 cases. At least 189,910 people have been declared cured by US health officials.
After the United States, the countries most affected are the United Kingdom, with 30,615 deaths in 206,715 cases, Italy, with 29,958 deaths (215,858 cases), Spain, with 26,070 deaths (221,447 cases) and France, with 25,987 deaths (174,791 cases) cases).
Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one with the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 73 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (56), Italy (50), United Kingdom (45) and France (40).
China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) officially reported a total of 82,885 cases (two new between Wednesday and today), including 4,633 deaths (0 new) and 77,957 cures.
Since Wednesday at 19:00 TMG, the Comorian Islands have announced the first death linked to the virus.
Europe totaled 151,576 deaths at 19:00 today in 1,655,117 cases, the United States and Canada 79,328 deaths (1,308,935 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 16,489 deaths (305,604 cases), Asia 10,001 deaths ( 269,025 cases), the Middle East 7,335 deaths (206,208 cases), Africa 2,065 deaths (53,334 cases) and Oceania 125 deaths (8,223 cases).
This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from health authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
AFP warns that, “due to corrections by the authorities or the late publication of the data, the 24-hour increase values may not exactly match those published the day before.”
Portugal, with 1,089 registered deaths and 26,182 confirmed cases, is the 21st country in the world with the most deaths and the 20th in number of infections.
