The alarming rise in the number of people infected was just a few hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel met with the prime ministers of all 16 federal states to agree on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

According to the Robert Koha Institute, the highest number of Covid-19 infections per day in Germany to date was recorded on 28 March.

Portugal declared a state of emergency on Wednesday due to the growing number of Covid-19 infections.

The state of emergency order, which will take effect on Thursday and will last for 15 days, authorizes the government to impose restrictions on movement and public life, Prime Minister Antoniu Kostta announced after a cabinet meeting in Lisbon.

Public gatherings will be allowed with a maximum of five people each, but private events will not exceed 50 participants.

People outside their homes will have to wear face masks. Those going to school or work will need to use the Covid-19 stop app, Stayaway Covid.

These measures still require the consent of the Portuguese Parliament.

Kosta warned that the situation is serious, with the number of new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday reaching 2,072, the highest in a single day in Portugal since the pandemic began.

In Portugal, with a population of 10.3 million, more than 91,000 cases of Covid-19 infection and 2,117 deaths have been reported so far. The pandemic has hit the north of the country particularly hard and the area around the capital, Lisbon.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals has increased from about 300 to almost 1,000 per month.
