The most commonly reported occupational disease in 2020 is covid-19, or infection with the coronavirus in the work situation. The number of new cases per 100,000 employees was estimated at 128. Occupational mental disorders (78 per 100,000) and disorders of the musculoskeletal system (30 per 100,000) are also common. Reports of occupational diseases are highest in healthcare, government, industry, construction and education.
In total, 1918 cases of Covid-19 as an occupational infectious disease were reported by 231 occupational physicians. By far the most reports came from nursing and care homes (48%) and hospitals (30%). Company doctors indicated in more than half of the fully completed reports that employees had had unprotected contact with the source of infection.
Key figures 2021 of NCvB
This is apparent from the ‘Key Figures 2021’ published today by the Netherlands Center for Occupational Diseases (NCvB), Public and Occupational Health, Amsterdam UMC, drawn up on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The report provides an overview of the number and nature of registered occupational diseases and the distribution within sectors and occupations in the Netherlands. In addition, it describes scientific and social developments with regard to occupational diseases.
