Covid-19 Soars, BOR in Malaysia Reaches 100 Percent

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Malaysia reported bed occupancy rate (BOR) in the ICU for patients Covid-19 reached 104 percent on Sunday (6/6).

The neighboring country has experienced a spike in Covid-19 cases since last May. To suppress the spread of the virus, the government even implemented a two-week regional lockdown, starting June 1.

Malaysia’s Director General of Health, Noor Hisham Abdullah said the bed usage which reached 104 percent was worrying, because not all critically ill patients had a place in the ICU.

“National hospitals are also experiencing an increase in category four, and five patients need oxygen and respiratory support, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with comorbidities,” Hisham said, citing The Malaysia Reserve, Wednesday (9/6).

Hisham said, the capacity of hospitals, especially the ICU for Covid-19 patients, was at a critical level and could continue to soar if people ignored the health protocols for one day.

“This situation cannot be taken lightly, especially if there are parties who spread inaccurate information about the situation.”

However, the bed occupancy rate in the general ward in the last two weeks decreased. From 99 percent to 89 percent.

Similarly, the use of beds in quarantine centers and treatment centers with mild symptoms was 54 percent.

On Wednesday (9/6) the daily cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia were 6,239. Of that number, 6,228 were local transmissions.

“The total (daily) deaths recorded are 75, while 905 cases are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU and 453 have been fitted with breathing apparatus yesterday,” Hisham said.

Until now, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has reached 634 thousand with a death toll of 3,611
