An outbreak of coronavirus contamination has been identified in mink farms in the south of the Netherlands. The authorities therefore decided to slaughter them using carbon monoxide. 10,000 minks are affected by this decision.
Animal welfare associations hoped to save them, but their request was rejected by the courts.
“These animals are sick. They are going to be slaughtered because we do not want the virus to spread further”, points out Benno Bruggink of the Dutch Food Safety Authority (NVWA).
Raised for their fur, the mink could have contaminated two employees, which would be the first confirmed case of transmission of Covid-19 from animal to man, according to the WHO.
