Covid-19: Morocco leads the African response

The Kingdom of Morocco has implemented a large-scale solidarity operation allowing fifteen countries from all sub-regions of the continent and the African Union (AU) to receive equipment and materials for the fight against the coronavirus. of King Mohammed VI, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) planes crisscrossed Africa from west to east, from north to south to send donations as quickly as possible.

Overall, nearly 8 million masks, 900,000 visors, 600,000 charlottes, 60,000 gowns, 30,000 liters of hydroalcoholic gel, 75,000 boxes of chloroquine and 15,000 boxes of azithromycin were distributed to fifteen countries.

These are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo, Eswatini, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal , Tanzania, Chad and Zambia.

The Cherifian Kingdom also integrated the African Union Commission (AU) in this surge of solidarity. On June 22, at Addis Ababa airport (Ethiopia), the executive of the Pan-African organization received 500,000 masks, 60,000 visors, 40,000 charlottes, 4,000 gowns and 2,000 liters of hydroalcoholic gel.

For Amira Elfadil, Commissioner for Social Affairs of the African Union, “these donations represent the values ​​of support and solidarity between the member states of the AU”.

In accordance with the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), all the protective products and equipment making up medical aids are made in Morocco.



Therefore, the Commissioner stressed the good health of Moroccan industry, not without reporting that “the AU Commission calls on member states to strengthen their capacities for manufacturing medical products”.

According to Mohamed Arrouchi, the permanent representative of Morocco to the AU, his country “is at the service of Africa and the vital interests of its citizens”. In addition, the diplomat declared that “Morocco, as the founding country of the institution (AU), remains faithful to its vision and its policy of south-south cooperation”.

For his part, Professor Victor Harison, Commissioner for Economic Affairs of the African Union (AU) presented his “sincere thanks” to King Mohammed VI, the government and the Moroccan people for “this oh so noble gesture”.

Globally, the harshness of the health crisis has somewhat damaged solidarity with nations fighting alone without worrying about the fate of their neighbors. Quite the opposite of Morocco, which “did not let its African brothers fend for themselves”, rejoices Mr. Harison.

Continuing, the AU Commissioner for Economic Affairs said “that we must develop this solidarity that we have not found elsewhere”.
