The media concludes that there are a number of similarities in a number of countries where the situation is currently most acute. Vaccination rates slowed over the summer, most restrictions were lifted or relaxed, and there was a noticeable political surge. It notes that, like Latvia, Romania has again vacated hospitals, especially for Covid-19 patients, and Romania has suspended all non-critical operations.
As a result, experts in several countries call the past month a lost summer in which governments were clearly not preparing for the next wave of Covid-19, although it was known that it would be. The media points out that the situation is particularly dire in Romania, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria.
Referring to Europol ‘s data, it emphasizes that three of them – Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria – also have markedly low public confidence in the government. This in turn has weakened vaccination campaign efforts.
In addition, political calculation hinders responsible decision-making in all three. The Romanian government has just fallen, Bulgaria has had a “temporary government” in power since the spring, and elections in Latvia will take place next year. In Lithuania, on the other hand, although no new elections are expected, the ruling politicians are reluctant to tighten restrictions, especially after the numerous protests against them.
