Courts will close from March 17, only urgent cases will continue NOW

All courts and tribunals will close from Tuesday to April 4 due to the corona virus, reports the Judgment Sunday evening. Only urgent matters will continue, but without an audience.

Urgent cases are cases where a judicial decision cannot be omitted, because it affects the rights of suspects or litigants, for example. Examples of this are bankruptcies, sessions on compulsory care, out-of-home placements and pre-trial hearings.

There is no longer any public present for these matters. However, the Public Prosecution Service (OM), lawyers and victims will be present. Journalists can be admitted in consultation with the court.

In addition, the Judiciary is examining whether written procedures can continue as much as possible. Even statements can still be made “where possible and must”. However, these are done without an audience and in the limited presence of journalists. The option to live stream statements is also being viewed.

The Court will announce more details on Monday about the closure of the courts and what the consequences will be.

The coronavirus in short

  • The virus mainly spreads through cough and sneeze droplets that hang briefly in the air.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. This number may decrease with proper precautions.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve older or already sick people. You can protect these people with precautions.
