Those who have always wanted their own island can now see their dream come true. The Irish island of Great Blasket is looking for a couple to inhabit the island and manage the cottages.
Great Blasket Island lies off the southeastern coast of Ireland and is approximately 4.5 square kilometers in size. The work consists of maintaining the coffee shop and three holiday homes on the island in the summer, from April to October.
The island is currently managed by Alice Hayes and Billy O’Connor, an Irish couple who live on the nearby Dingle Peninsula and regularly take the boat to the island. Hayes has posted the vacancy on Twitter and has said he has already received seven thousand responses so far. They specifically ask for a couple or two friends, so in principle any pair can sign up.
The so-called ‘caretakers’ can continue to live on the island throughout the year. Accommodation and food are made available, while salary can be negotiated. However, it must be taken into account that there is no running hot water, electricity or Wi-Fi available.
To obtain electricity, it is recommended to take a generator that runs on wind energy because of the strong gusts of wind on the island. Because of a nearby mast, the mobile internet is excellent.
Despite the idyllic nature and the fact that you have your own island, there is a warning about the hard work. “The campfires, fields and sunsets look beautiful, but you also have to take into account the household in the houses and the busyness at the coffee shop,” said Lesley Kehoe, who inhabited and cared for the island in 2019 with her partner Gordon Bond.
