A couple of pig farmers from Komen-Waasten died on Wednesday. That writes the Krant van West-Vlaanderen. The couple was shoveling pig manure and toxic gases had been released.

The facts took place in the NV Taveirne pig farm, located along the Nieuwkerkebaan. Owner Patrick Taveirne and his wife were turning pig manure, releasing a lot of poisonous gases. The gases accumulated and the man lost consciousness. His wife could still call outside for help, but then went back inside to help her husband. As a result, she too became overcome by the gases.
The eldest daughter had heard her mother’s cries for help and came to the rescue. She could still get her parents out of the stable, but any help came too late.
No malice
The public prosecutor’s office in Tournai is investigating the case, but assumes a unfortunate accident. They rule out malicious intent.
The pig farm recently came into the news because neighbors opposed the expansion of the company.
