Similarly, Porras Argueta added: “We reject any accusation” to be part of “a process of coup d’état”.

The attorney general was accompanied by Ángel Pineda, general secretary of the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office), and prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche, all of whom have been sanctioned by the United States in the last three years on charges of “undermine” Justice in Guatemala.

Denounce coup d’état

The prosecutor’s statement comes four days after Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo de León accused her of carrying out “Step by Step” and “coup” to avoid his inauguration next January.

Arévalo de León won the elections on August 25 despite attempts by the Public Ministry led by Porras to suspend his candidacy and that of his social democratic party, Movimiento Semilla, from July 12 for an alleged case of false signatures in 2018.

Because of this, the OAS Secretary General arrived in Guatemala on Monday to supervise the transition process from the current president, Alejandro Giammattei, to the president-elect, Bernardo Arévalo de León.

Porras Argueta added this Tuesday that “Anyone who needs to know the progress of the complaints that comes closer” to the entity.

In the same context, on Monday one of the lawyers of the Seed Movement, the elected deputy Andrea Zeceña, indicated that they have been denied at least 29 times access to the accusation file against the political group by the Public Ministry.

The investiture of Arévalo de León is scheduled for next January 14, so that his Government begins for a period of four years.
